We are happy to invite you to the research seminar by the Department of Theoretical Economics. On December 21  Nerijus Černiauskas will present the topic „Tracking and Forecasting Platform Workers in Lithuania" in 402 room and MS Teams.

Brief overview of the seminar

The number of (online) platform workers (digital workers, members of the gig economy) has been rising since the 2010s and Lithuania was no exception, particularly since 2015, when Uber entered the country. Data on platform workers in Lithuania is relatively scattered, but this paper provides an estimate for the number of platform workers and projects it into the future. To do so, it utilizes two online surveys, google trends, tax register data as well the online labor index that tracks the number of tasks by 11 largest online paltfroms. The estimates suggest that as many as 142 thousand platform workers may have been operating in Lithuania in 2023, and this number is projected to increase to 157 thousand by 2028.
